Plastic Bag Bans in Africa, Plastic Bottle Bans in the US and Plastic Pollution Coalition at it again !
Mauritania has banned the use of plastic bags to protect the environment and the lives of land and sea animals.
More than 70% of cattle and sheep that die in the capital, Nouakchott, are killed by eating plastic bags, environment ministry official Mohamed Yahya told BBC Afrique.
Plastic bag manufacturers could be jailed for up to a year. Plastic makes up a quarter of 56,000 tonnes of waste produced annually in Nouakchott, official statistics show.
Mauritania’s Organization of Consumer Protection head Moctar Ould Tauf said he welcomed the ban, Efe news agency reports. It was of “particular importance” given the negative impact of plastic bags on the environment, animals and marine species, he said.
Environment Minister Amedi Camara said that nearly all of the plastic package waste is not “collected and is found in the natural environment – land and sea – where they are sometimes ingested by marine species and livestock, causing their death”. Continue reading

Given the incredible response we have had over the past week, we thought we would fire out a quick update via the old interweb. It is Friday morning, everyone needs a coffee to prepare for the weekend, so here is Hugh’s idea…
In the rewards department, we have two new levels:
- Thea Designs has donated 5 beautiful trademark Stirling silver OceanGybe Winged Anchors necklases
- LiveGreenVictoria ‘s household energy audits are a winning deal. Reduce your energy consumption, use less plastic and help us with Tide Lines.

- Huge thanks to Sitka and KarenJess for their support !

Andrew, Arwen and all the incredible folks involved in producing Tide Lines are hard at work in basements, lofts and small dark rooms watching hours and hours of OceanGybe footage, picking the gems from the rough, polishing them, and placing them in exactly the right spot ! Thanks again to everyone and lets keep the momentum going !
