Wow, THAT was crazy! We just exited the last of the Gatun locks at the east end of the Panama Canal and are bobbing in the lake, 120 ft above sea level!!! See ya later Atlantic Ocean… Pacific here we come! Through the 3 locks we were sandwiched between 2 other sailing boat of similar size to Khulula; a lucky position to be in because we were protected from the lock walls by each boat. However, it meant that Khulula was the power behind the flotilla; so helms’ man Bryson had a tough job steering us as we battled the wake thrown off the 500′ tanker we were slotted in behind. There were a couple of tense moment when it looked like we might hit the east wall of the canal, but managed to steer away from it and avert disaster (for the boat on that side!) We’ll spend the night on a mooring buoy rafted up to 3 other boats. Tomorrow we will be joined again by an advisor and begin motoring across Gatun Lake around 6am to the locks on the Pacific side. Look for us on the webcam about 7am or 8am PST!
