We are anchored in stunning “Friendly Cove” on Nootka Island. Home of the Yuquot first nations, the settlement here is steeped in history and happens to be the first place that Captain Cook dropped anchor on the west coast of British Columbia! Hikers know this place as the destination of the Nootka hiking trail, the place the catch the Uchuck ferry back to Gold River on the mainland. Sandford, master carver of totems, plaques and masks took a few minutes out of a morning of filleting halibut to show us his incredible woodshop. His pieces sell for 10’s of thousands of dollars, from the lodges in Tofino to galleries in New york, and every single piece was created in this little wood shop, down by the water in Friendly Cove!
