Sitka Surfboards (www.sitkasurfboards.com) have once again decided to lead the way in trying to push the issue of plastics and single use consumer containers in the forefront of people’s minds. Stop making this issue something that is easy to ignore but rather place it directly in their path/headlights/focus… Enter the THE PLASTICS JAR OF SHAME !

So now when anyone comes into their stores in Vancouver or Victoria with a single use plastic water bottle (that has not been refilled or reused) or a single use coffee cup, they will be asked to place $1 into the Jar of Shame that is sitting conveniently on the counter. This small motivation will surely help in the effort to take all this knowledge we have about the scourge of disposable plastics and put it into effect in our everyday lives.  All their donations will then be donated to the OceanGybe School Tour coming in 2011.

So The Sitka Challenge, if you are willing to accept, is to put a similar JAR OF SHAME system in place in your store/ office/ cubicle/ home/ business.  Once the JAR fills up (which it will), feel free to donate it to any cause you feel worthwhile and know that you have been helping remove plastics from our oceans, our landfills and ultimately our bodies.

Donate the funds to your local school, donate to an Environmental NGO in your area, donate it to OceanGybe to help with the School tour, donate it to the Surfrider Foundation…

This is an easily implemented idea that will help all of us change those habits which we know are wrong, but cannot seem to shake. So take up the Sitka JAR OF SHAME Challenge and keep us up to date with how it goes…
