Hugh speaking at Walnut Park Elementary

Onwards goes the red van around British Columbia. We arrived in Smithers, BC yesterday after a long drive from Canmore, Alberta.

Smithers, BC is home to about 6000 people and is a regional service center for the entire Bulkley Valley. The town is set against the backdrop of Hudson Bay Mountain to the west and the Babine Mountain range to the east which makes a very picturesque setting.

Student recycles all this refuse in Smithers.

Yesterday we spent the day chatting to two classes at Walnut Park Elementary and were extremely impressed by the student knowledge about the issues around plastics in our oceans, rivers and streams. They knew the origins of plastics and were able to answer many of our questions directly.

This morning we were able to chat to students at Smithers Secondary School. We have never had a quieter or more attentive audience and would like to thank both schools for allowing us to visit.

Off to explore the local mountain biking trails around the city….
