At 3pm yesterday afternoon, slightly less that a week after leaving Bali, S/V Khulula pulled into the Cocos Keeling lagoon! Very reminiscent of the Tuamotu atolls in French Polynesia, this island paradise is in the absolute teeth of the trade winds, and being very low in aspect (the islands), the lagoon is very windy too. We dropped anchor in the lee of the northern most island in the chain, Discovery Island, in 5m of perfect, crystal clear water. This island is completely uninhabited with most Cocos Residents living on either Home Island (the Malays) or West Island (the Aussies). After our visit from the Customs and Quarantine fellows, we took a swim to shore to check out the paradise of Discovery Island. We found fresh water tanks, BBQ pits, decrepid volleyball court, and a little shelter covered in memorabilia left by passing yatchs. Currently the anchorage is empty, the last boat having left about 2 hours before our arrival, so over the joy of making landfall is the knowledge that this is a very brief stop and it is time to be heading west! Today we will journey to Home Island to explore and to pick up Dave Abercrombie! Check out this waypoint on Google Earth, it is a really cool spot. Also, stay tuned for the next bunch of position reports starting from early next week and covering our passage to Mauritius!
